What kind of bumpers to choose for a warehouse hall?
Technical standards that matter
-
✅ EN ISO 14122
Applies to fixed means of access to machinery (e.g., platforms, platforms, stairs), but also applies to guardrails – specifying minimum heights, clearances, strength of guardrails, etc. -
✅ EN ISO 13857
Standard that defines safe distances to prevent body parts from reaching danger zones. Related to the design of physical safety barriers – crucial for fencing off machinery and risk zones. -
✅ PN-EN 15512 / 15635
Standards for the construction of storage racks, including recommendations for protecting them from damage – for example, by installing rack bumpers, corner bumpers, wall bumpers. -
✅ PN-EN ISO 1090
This is a standard relating to the manufacture of steel and aluminum components used in load-bearing structures – including more elaborate technical security systems. It covers, among other things, certification of the production facility. -
✅ PN-EN ISO 9001
Quality management system standard. While not directly applicable to the product, it is often required by investors as confirmation that the manufacturer is implementing a consistent, controlled process.
⚖️ Domestic law and health and safety
In Poland, the employer’s security obligations are mainly based on:
- Labor Code, Articles 207 and 215 – obliging to ensure safe working conditions,
- Regulations of the Minister of Labor and Social Policy of 1997. – which says, among other things, that pedestrian and vehicle traffic zones must be physically separated,
- Health and safety regulations applicable to specific industries (e.g., food, chemical, logistics).
Guardrails and bumpers are therefore not only recommended – they are often necessary to avoid fines, accidents or missed inspections.
🛠️ What technical requirements should a good bumper meet?
Although there is no single standard “just for bumpers,” many documents indirectly indicate what features good industrial protection should have. These include:
- Resistance to impact of a specific force (kN),
- Clear color coding (yellow-black, red-white),
- No sharp edges or elements that endanger workers,
- Durability of the material in the working environment (e.g., resistance to corrosion, chemicals),
- Stable installation, preferably with chemical or mechanical anchors.
Summary: Standards are not an obstacle – they are a guarantee
Properly selected guardrails and bumpers not only protect, but also make it easier for the developer to meet legal obligations. Well-designed technical security can determine the positive outcome of an audit, construction acceptance or health and safety review.
When choosing a manufacturer, it is worth paying attention not only to price or aesthetics, but also to its experience, compliance with standards and quality of documentation.
